In this blog we are going one step further and comparing all three products at once. We will be looking into attributes such as sizing, application, appearance and product maintenance.

This post aims to help you make an informed decision on which product will be the best option for your surface.

Difference between Whiteboards, Whiteboard Paint and Dry Erase Wallcovering

Sizing

The size of the area you want to cover can largely impact which whiteboard product might be the best choice for you.

Our whiteboard paint or wallpaper products allow you to create an unlimited whiteboard / dry erase area.

Whiteboards are usually limited in size. Our products are more about transforming an entire wall or room into an engaging space. If you want only a smaller working area, traditional whiteboards might be more suitable for you.

  • Smart Whiteboard Paint comes in a variety of sized kits ideal for covering anything from a small surface to an entire room. Kits sizes are currently available in 2m2, 6m2, 12m2, 18m2 and 34m2.
  • Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering is available in rolls of 10m². Each roll measures 1.22m x 8.25m and multiple rolls can be purchased for larger surface areas.

Traditional whiteboards are usually available in small sizes and if you wanted to cover an entire wall you would have to apply multiple whiteboards which would not look great nor would it be cost effective.

Application
If you can paint, you can paint a whiteboard area with our whiteboard paint!

Smart Whiteboard Paint is applied in just five simple steps. The covered surface can then be used seven days after application as it requires curing time. Watch the application video for Smart Whiteboard Paint.

For a more time sensitive application choose Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering. This will be ready to use as soon as the wallpaper adhesive is dry – typically within 24 hours, meaning you can start enjoying the advantages of the surface the very next day.

The usual methods of installing whiteboards consists of a professional being required to mount the board at a straight angle, before ensuring it is firmly attached to the wall.

It is then forever fixed to the wall until it’s removed, leaving holes or screws in the surfaces.

Appearance

Smart Whiteboard Paint, once applied, has a glossy finish on the surface. It can be applied seamlessly into any room, as when not in use, it looks little different from regular white paint.

Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering has a high gloss finish. Like Smart Whiteboard Paint, it is applied directly onto the wall meaning it creates a smooth surface. It also does not appear clunky like regular whiteboards but can instead make a room look bigger. If you are looking a low sheen version, check out Smart 2 in 1 Wallcovering: Projector and Dry Erase.

Traditional whiteboards are usually coated with a metal/plaster border. They can appear bulky and usually comprise of the whiteboard and a chunky frame. This can in some cases also be a health and safety hazard, especially for locations like classrooms or schools as there can be the risk of the whiteboard falling off the wall.

Colour

Smart Whiteboard Paint, unlike whiteboards and our whiteboard wallcoverings , is available in both white and clear shades. The clear version means it can be applied on top of any paint colour on your wall (except white) . It can even be applied on top of wallpaper or a digital print. This provides you with the ability to create a dry erase surface in any colour and any size you choose. Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering is also currently only available in white.

There are some traditional whiteboards available on the market that are available different colours. However these whiteboards are usually very small in size, usually a maximum of 2m2.

Maintenance

Both Smart Whiteboard Paint and Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering can be maintained in good condition by using them alongside high quality whiteboard markers. We offer a range of these along with a variety of sprays to help you make the most of your surface.

In order to maintain a whiteboard, you would need to regularly remove any marker on the board, leaving them on preferably for no longer than 24 hours. You will also need to regularly clean your board with high quality whiteboard spray, however this may be more difficult with stubborn stains.

Environmental

Smart Whiteboard Paint, unlike many standard paints, is a low VOC product meaning it is solvent free and not harmful to the environment.

Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering, as it is a wallpaper, has no VOC and therefore does not bring any toxins into the environment. This means it can be easily applied with people in the area.

Traditional whiteboards are non-biodegradable which means they do not break down over time. When removed from the wall they are sent to landfills and can not be recycled. Overall they have a negative impact on the environment.

Health and Safety

Health and safety should also be taken into account when deciding what product best suits your needs.

Traditional whiteboards can either be installed onto a wall or wheeled about from classroom to classroom. There can unfortunately be a number of safety risks that can occur with these. If the whiteboard is in correctly installed this could result in injury if the whiteboard were to fall off. Similarly if the whiteboard is being moved around from place to place this could result in collisions if the person can not see what is ahead of them.

As Smart Whiteboard Paint and Smart Dry Erase Wallcovering are applied directly onto the wall there is no fear of similar accidents occurring.
