Magnetic Chalkboard Wall
If you would like a magnetic chalkboard wall in your office just like this one, just follow these simple steps.
Apply Magnetic Paint
- We recommend 3 coats of Smart Magnetic Paint. You can apply extra coats to increase magnetic performance (no more than 7).
- Stir the paint before use.
- Apply a generous and even coat of Smart Magnetic Paint to the surface, leaving a smooth finish. Once the first coat is dry (after approximately 2 hours), lightly sand the surface with 1200 grade sandpaper. Remove any surface dust with a dry brush or cloth.
- Apply a generous and even second coat of Smart Magnetic Paint. Allow to dry and sand lightly. Repeat the process until you have applied your desired number of coats.
Top tip for professional installers: You can add a final layer of magnetic paint by using a straight metal edge to skim the product across the top of the surface to create a highly smooth finish.
Apply Chalkboard Paint
- Once the last coat of Smart Magnetic Paint is dry, lightly sand the surface.
- Stir paint thoroughly before use. For best results, apply paint using a foam roller.
- Paint the surface using light even strokes, covering 1 metre sections at a time.
- Apply 2 coats allowing first coat to dry before applying the second coat (approx. 2 hours).
Note: Smart Blackboard Paint will be touch-dry in 1 hour and usable after 24 hours.
Cleaning
- Your blackboard surface can be cleaned with a microfiber eraser or Smart Sponge.
- A chalky residue will remain when cleaning with a dry cloth or eraser. This can be removed by using a wet cloth.
Note: Before writing on the surface for the first time, condition the surface by rubbing the side of a stick of chalk all over the surface and erasing immediately with a dry cloth or eraser.
Magnetic Writable Wall (in any colour!)
If you would like a magnetic writable wall in your office just like this one, just follow these simple steps.
Apply Magnetic Paint
- We recommend 3 coats of Smart Magnetic Paint. You can apply extra coats to increase the magnetic performance (no more than 7).
- Stir the magnetic paint before use.
- Apply a generous and even coat of Smart Magnetic Paint to the surface leaving a smooth finish.
Top tip: You can add a final layer of magnetic paint by using a straight metal edge to skim the product across the top of the surface to create a highly smooth finish.
Prime The Surface
- Prime the magnetic surface using a good quality water based white primer, such as Smart White Primer, until the grey colour is completely covered.
For a Smart Wall Paint white finish – It is essential to use a white primer before applying our whiteboard paint on top. Note: Ordinary emulsion/latex paint is not suitable for use as a primer as it may absorb our coating, which should sit on the surface rather than getting soaked into the surface.
For a coloured surface: paint the surface with a high sheen/gloss paint in the colour of your choice. This must be applied before Smart Wall Paint.
Drying time takes 2-4 hours between coats and 12 hours after the final coat has been applied.
Mix and Stir
- Pour all Part As into Part B.
- It is important to stir thoroughly for no less than five minutes using the stirring stick in your kit.
- Apply within one hour of mixing, using the roller sleeve in your kit. Once mixed, the paint must be applied in one hour (high temperatures will reduce this time).
Apply
- Smart Wall Paint should be applied in 1 metre sections.
- Paint around the edges of the first 1 metre section with a new brush.
- With the new roller, apply Smart Wall Paint to this 1 metre section. Pass the roller over the entire surface 10 times to ensure a generous, smooth and even coating.
- Upon completion of each one metre section, examine the painted surface from three angles for any imperfections, missed spots or areas of uneven application. Apply more Smart Wall Paint as required.
- Ensure each metre section has adequate Smart Wall Paint to create a writing surface, before moving on to the next one metre section.
- Once the first one metre section is complete and has been inspected, move to the second section and repeat.
Examine
- Examine the painted surface from several angles. Go over any missed spots or pinholes on the surface, while the surface is still wet.
Drying Time
- Affix the ‘wet paint’ sign alongside the painted surface. Smart Wall Paint will be touch dry after five hours.
- Please note the ‘Ready to Use’ date (seven days from application), when users will be able to start writing on and wiping off the new Smarter Surface.
- The performance (erasability) of Smart Wall Paint will continue to improve over the first 30 days. During the first 14 days we recommend cleaning your surface daily.
- For best results, use Smarter Surfaces accessories or any high quality whiteboard accessories available here.
